ITP 124 - Introduction to Interpreting II

Lecture Hours: 3.00
This course gives students a fundamental background in the theoretical and practical aspects of interpretation, focusing on skill development in the classroom on these three levels, prepared or rehearsed, simultaneous, and consecutive. This course also guides students in achieving ethical competence and professionalism.

Prerequisite(s): A minimum grade of C- in ASL 281  and ITP 121  
SLOs:
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Discuss the Code of Professional Conduct for interpreters as it applies to professional scenarios.

  • Identify common business practices in the profession of interpreting.

  • Apply skills, techniques, and theories to interpret between American Sign Language (ASL) and English at an intermediate level.

  • Explain linguistic and process theories and approaches to interpreting.

  • Demonstrate interpreting skills in both consecutive and simultaneous methods.

  • Describe current licensure laws for Iowa and Illinois.

  • Describe assessments and screenings available to interpreters, particularly the Educational Interpreters Performance Assessment (EIPA) and National Interpreters Certification (NIC).

  • Demonstrate ethical decision making skills.
