Academic Curricula Organization
The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and the AHIMA Council for Excellence in Education establishes the academic curricula for HIM programs at the associate, baccalaureate, and graduate levels.
Program Mission
The Health Information Management (HIM) Program at Scott Community College (SCC) part of the Eastern Iowa Community Colleges will enable our students to develop the technical skills necessary for an entry or mid-level job managing health information in both paper and electronic media across the entire continuum of healthcare delivery systems. This program will adequately prepare our graduates in all required competencies for successful completion of the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) credentialing exam. The attainment of this credential will offer our students good job opportunities in hospitals, long-term care facilities, ambulatory care facilities, commercial insurance and government agencies processing medical claims, and private industry.
Program Goals
- To offer the opportunity for individuals, regardless of race, sex, or creed to acquire the necessary educational base required to demonstrate the entry-level competencies of a health information management professional as defined by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). These competencies are defined, nationally accepted standards of professional’s roles and functions. The curriculum will include all required elements of an AHIMA HIM Curricula Competencies for Associate Degree programs.
- Increase enrollment and retention by actively marketing and recruiting students for the HIM programs, as well as supporting the needs of our current students so they may graduate into the profession.
- Retain faculty members who are involved in ongoing educational and professional growth activities who also engage and encourage successful students.
- To provide educational opportunities for the community of interest, including employees currently in the HIM field and to provide the community with quality graduates, prepared to function as effective professional of HIM.
- Provide graduates with the knowledge to pass the Registered Health Information Technology examination and become credentialed.
