2023 - 2024 Health Information Management Student Handbook

Welcome from the Program Director

Welcome to the Health Information Management (HIM) program. Upon entering, this program you have chosen a challenging and rewarding career as a Health Information Management professional. When you successfully graduate and enter the profession you will function as a key member of the health team.

The HIM faculty congratulates you and welcomes you to a great profession. The program course of five semesters will be busy, challenging and extremely rewarding. The courses are delivered in an online format for all the core courses, with the exception of the two Professional Practice Experiences. The Professional Practice Experiences require a student to be on site working within a healthcare organization. Both experiences consist of 96 hours and are completed during work day hours and the regular work week under the direct supervision of an HIM professional. Please plan for this as you move forward through the program, as there are no exceptions to this requirement.

We understand that being a student is only one part of your life, and we would like to be of assistance to you in any way we can to make sure you are successful in the program, please keep us informed if you have questions or problems arise. We are available during posted office hours; please call to schedule an appointment.

At the completion of this program and upon graduation all students will be eligible to sit for the National Examination to receive your Registered Health Information Technologist credential offered by the American Health Information Management Association. With this credential graduates will increase their changes of employment and higher wages.

This handbook has been designed to provide you with information you need to understand the expectations of this program. Please contact us if you have any questions regarding materials in this handbook.

I look forward to working with each of you as you progress toward a career as a health information management professional.

Sincerely,

Carrie Jackson, M.Ed., RHIA
