Student Support Services

Academic Accommodations

Disability Services is dedicated to helping students find and implement reasonable academic accommodations. The accommodation process involves input from both the student and the instructor. To determine appropriate accommodations, the disability service provider (DSP) engages in an individualized inquiry that balances the needs of the student and the academic objectives of the course or program. Students and instructors are encouraged to review the list of common accommodation descriptions

Academic Support - Tutoring

All three of our colleges work hard to provide tutoring services, free of charge, to their students. Whether it’s the Student Success Center in Clinton, the Success Center in Muscatine or the Academic Support Center at Scott, we’re here to help. All three centers are open weekdays and most evenings. All you have to do is stop in and ask for help!

For campus-specific information about how to find and access tutoring services, please go to the website.

ACCESS

ACCESS is a program for high school age special education students that is designed to help students obtain vocational and employability skills. ACCESS provides local districts within the Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency (AEA 9) service area with an additional option to meet the vocational needs of students with disabilities.

More information can be found on our website.

Disability Resources - ADA Compliance

Eastern Iowa Community Colleges ensures that its programs, activities, and services are in compliance with access provisions of state and federal civil rights legislation for persons with disabilities. The Americans with Disability Act (ADA) defines a person with a disability as any person who has a record of, or is regarded as having, a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activity. An “otherwise qualified individual with a disability” is a person who, with or without reasonable accommodations, can meet the essential program or course requirements.

District policy calls for reasonable accommodation to be made for otherwise qualified individuals with disabilities on an individualized basis. It is, however, the responsibility of the student to seek available assistance at each college, to make his/her needs known, to complete the Disabilities Services Intake form, and to provide current documentation of disability. Students with disabilities may use a variety of services or reasonable accommodations intended to reduce the effects that a disability may have on their performance in an academic setting. Services do not lower course standards or alter degree requirements but instead give students a better chance to demonstrate their academic abilities.

Information about making your classroom materials compliant can be found at the Instructor Resource Center (on Canvas), under the Academic Accommodations and ADA Compliance module. Additional resources can be found below, as well.

Dropout Detective

Dropout Detective is a student retention and success solution that integrates directly with Canvas to provide a “risk index” of current student behavior.  This program pulls together the different reasons a student is at risk and makes it easy to quickly go through and look at what might be happening with a student and determine an appropriate intervention strategy.

Dropout Detective has been implemented to serve both online and eCompanion courses.  As such, the processes for determining potential positive or negative actions are fed by different data.  For example:  Where online students may demonstrate a retention risk by not logging into their Canvas course for a period of time, a student in an eCompanion class may not be required to log in with any frequency.  The more data you can feed DD, such as a thorough and accurate grade book populated with assignments, due dates, and scores,  the more accurate the predictive model will be.

Dropout Detective also provides a direct communication link between instructor and advisor.  With a few intuitive clicks, information can be shared with the student’s “ally” to give them a picture of where they stand in their class.  This helps the advisor to proactively approach students who are at risk and to communicate back to the faculty that it has been addressed.

Below is a link to an information sheet on DD.  If you have additional questions or would like to learn more, please contact the eLearning team at canvashelp@eicc.edu or 563-328-7693.
