EGR 290 - Thermodynamics

This course focuses on the basic elements of classical thermodynamics including the first and second laws of thermodynamics, work, heat, energy, ideal gases, the Carnot cycle, efficiency, entropy, exergy, vapor power cycles, gas power cycles, and refrigeration cycles.

Prerequisite(s): CHM 165 , MAT 210 , and PHY 212

Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the first and second laws of thermodynamics.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of thermodynamic properties.

  • Evaluate thermodynamic properties using state equations and tabulated data.

  • Analyze the thermodynamics of open and closed systems.

  • Relate realistic engineering problems to thermodynamic fundamentals.

  • Apply thermodynamic principles to analyze performance of engineering components and systems.

  • Use critical thinking and quantitative methods to analyze and solve problems.
