CIM 215 - Abstracting Principles & Practices I

This course will introduce students to the principles of cancer registry abstracting. Identification and selection of appropriate clinical information from medical records in a manner consistent with cancer registry regulatory core data item requirements will be emphasized. Recording accurate coding and staging of site-specific cancer information and use of CNExT cancer registry software from C/NET solutions will be introduced/.

Prerequisite(s): A minimum grade of C- in CIM 200 CIM 205 CIM 210 , and CIM 230 .

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Prepare necessary demographic data on cancer patients and assign required codes for data fields.
  • Prepare necessary medical history data on cancer patients and assign required codes for data fields.
  • Prepare necessary diagnostic data on cancer patients and assign required codes for data fields.
  • Identify the major characteristics in the diagnosis of cancer; topography, morphology, tumor behavior, and grading of the tumor.
  • Code completely the major characteristics in the diagnosis of cancer; topography, morphology, tumor behavior, and grading of the tumor.
  • Prepare necessary treatment data on cancer patients and assign required codes for data fields.
  • Accurately assign cancer staging data fields.
