EMS 285 - Paramedic II Credit(s) 13.00 Lecture Hours: 10.00 Lab Hours: 5.00 Co-op Hours: 2.00
This course is designed to prepare a student to function at the level of a National Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)-Paramedic. The Paramedic II Course is the second in a three-course series leading to Paramedic certification. The EMT-Paramedic Program prepares competent entry-level Paramedics in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains. The course is designed to provide the National Paramedic with the education and skills necessary to provide out-of-hospital emergency medical care at the advanced life support level of the highest quality with an EMS agency, Fire Service, or other specialized services.
Prerequisite(s): EMS 280 SLOs: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate the cognitive ability to use critical thinking when faced with patients with numerous medical emergencies, including but not limited to altered mental status, toxicology, abdominal pain, diabetes, behavioral emergencies and vascular conditions.
- Demonstrate the cognitive and psychomotor abilities required to implement a treatment plan for pediatric patients based on assessment.
- Demonstrate the cognitive and psychomotor abilities to implement a treatment plan for the obstetric patient including care of the newborn and postpartum care.
- Demonstrate the cognitive and psychomotor abilities to perform the complete trauma assessment.
- Demonstrate the cognitive and psychomotor abilities to safely and effectively function in the emergency operations environment, with an emphasis on provider safety.
- Demonstrate the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective abilities required as a team member and then as the team leader in a variety of prehospital emergency situations.
- Demonstrate the cognitive, psychomotor and affective abilities required in the performance as an entry-level paramedic with regard to medical and trauma patients.
