This course is designed to prepare a student to function at the level of a National Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)-Paramedic. The Paramedic I Course is the first in a three-course series leading to Paramedic certification. The EMT-Paramedic Program prepares competent entry-level Paramedics in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains. The course is designed to provide the National Paramedic with the education and skills necessary to provide out-of-hospital emergency medical care at the advanced life support level of the highest quality with an EMS agency, Fire Service, or other specialized services.
Prerequisite(s): Must have current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) card.
Must have current State of Iowa Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification. Recommended and Non-Course Requisites: Must have current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) card.
Must have current State of Iowa Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification. SLOs: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Exhibit an understanding of medical/legal issues relating to Emergency Medical Service (EMS).
- Exhibit an understanding of human anatomy and physiology.
- Demonstrate the cognitive and psychomotor abilities to safely administer medications.
- Demonstrate the cognitive and psychomotor ability to safely perform airway management, including simple maneuvers and adjuncts to advanced adjuncts, such as endotracheal intubation and cricothyrotomies.
- Demonstrate the cognitive and psychomotor abilities to safely and proficiently gain venous access, (IV and IO methods) in all patient age groups.
- Demonstrate the cognitive and psychomotor abilities to effectively ventilate intubated and non-intubated patients of all age groups.
- Demonstrate the cognitive and psychomotor abilities to perform a comprehensive assessment on adult, pediatric and geriatric patients.
- Demonstrate the cognitive and psychomotor abilities to effectively interpret 4 lead and 12 lead EKG’s.
- Demonstrate the cognitive and critical-thinking abilities necessary for the management of patients with cardiac and respiratory emergencies.
