MUS 223 - Music Theory IV Credit(s) 4.00 Lecture Hours: 3.00 Lab Hours: 2.00 This course is an introduction to the techniques and materials of twentieth century music through analysis, listening and writing. Sight singing and aural skills included.
Prerequisite(s): MUS 222 SLOs: Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Analyze and write chromatic chords including modal mixture chords, Neapolitan chords and augmented triads.

Analyze and write augmented sixth chords.

Modulate using augmented sixth chords.

Analyze and write chords of the ninth, eleventh and the thirteenth.

Analyze and write complex chord progressions.

Recognize procedures from the twentieth century including chromatic third relationships, evasion of tonic and unconventional root movement.

Recognize procedures used in impressionistic compositions.

Recognize procedures used in later twentieth century practices including atonality and twelve tone systems.
