EMS 820 - Prehospital Trauma Life Support

This course, Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) is presented utilizing the Standards and Guidelines for Emergency Trauma Care under the direction of the American College of Surgeons. This intensive hands-on course is a unique educational opportunity that was created in recognition for the real need in Emergency Medical Service (EMS) education for additional training in the care of the trauma patient. This course is designed to enhance and increase the knowledge and skills necessary in delivering critical care in the pre-hospital environment. Upon successful course completion, the student will receive an American College of Surgeons PHTLS Provider certification card for a four-year certification period.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the ability to assess a trauma patient.
  • Demonstrate the skills necessary to manage life threatening trauma conditions.
  • Demonstrate the skills necessary to control hemorrhage.
  • Demonstrate the skills necessary to manage the traumatic airway, breathing and circulation.
  • Demonstrate the ability to manage a multi-system trauma patient.
  • Demonstrate the skills necessary to manage chest, head, and musculoskeletal injuries.
