The Cancer Information Management program at Scott Community College is accredited by the National Cancer Registrar’s Association.

Program Mission

The Cancer Information Management (CIM) program at Scott Community College (SCC) part of the Eastern Iowa Community Colleges (EICC) provides high quality cancer information management education and training to a diverse population of students in order to fill community and national healthcare organizational needs for credentialed CIM professionals. The program enables students to develop the skills necessary for positions in cancer registry. The program will adequately prepare graduates in all required competencies for successful completion of the Certified Tumor Registry (CTR) credentialing examination. The attainment of this credential will offer students job opportunities in hospitals, central registries, as well as private and government registry organizations.

Program Goals

  • GOAL: To offer the opportunity for individuals, regardless of race, sex, or creed to acquire the necessary educational base required to demonstrate the entry-level competencies of a cancer registrar technician as defined by the NCRA, which are the defined, nationally accepted standards of practitioner roles and functions.
    • STANDARD: The curriculum will include all entry-level competencies and required knowledge cluster content as defined by NCRA. 80% of students will receive favorable PPE evaluations. 80% of students will pass the Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) exam.
    • STANDARD: The curriculum will reflect current practice within the profession.
    • STANDARD: Working graduates will express satisfaction with the preparation they received from the program.
  • GOAL: To retain faculty members who are involved in ongoing educational and professional growth activities.
    • STANDARD: All faculty and adjunct instructional staff are qualified and competent by virtue of their education, experience, and professional credentials.
    • STANDARD: All faculty members will participate in at least one education-focused program such as those offered by NCRA annually.
  • GOAL: To provide an educational opportunity for the community of interest, including employees currently in the CIM field and to provide the community with quality graduates, prepared to function as effective practitioners of CIM.
    • STANDARD: CIM courses will include students who are currently working in the CIM field.
    • STANDARD: Courses will be offered on a flexible schedule, while still maintaining proper sequencing of courses.

Program Objectives

  • Core competencies in abstracting, oncology coding, and staging of 30 simulated cancer charts representing a broad spectrum of body system neoplasms are achieved at a satisfactory level. This prepares students for success on their national exam as well as success in their career as a CIM Professional.
  • Core competencies with computer usage in cancer registry, health statistics, and cancer data presentations and reporting are achieved at a satisfactory level. This prepares the students for success on their national exam as well as success in their career as a CIM Professional.
