2023 - 2024 Cancer Information Management Student Handbook

Welcome from the Program Director

Dear Students:

Welcome to the Cancer Information Management (CIM) program. Upon entering, this program you have chosen a challenging and rewarding career as a cancer information management professional. When you graduate, complete your National Certification Examination, and enter the profession you will function as a key member of the health team.

The CIM faculty congratulates you and welcomes you to a great profession. The program course has three models, an AAS Degree, Diploma and Advanced Certificate. There are specific qualifications to each level and pre-requisites that need to be made before beginning the program.
It is an important part of the program to note, that once all core courses are complete, students will then enter into their Capstone course. This course will require students to work on-site at a healthcare organization under the direct supervision of a Certified Tumor Registrar. The Healthcare Site Coordinator will assist the student with locating a site. There are alternative options for completing the onsite hours, but those alternative options will only be provided once all on-site options have been exhausted. Students will complete a series of five assessment for core competencies throughout the program, two of which will be offered during CIM-230 and CIM-250 and the three other assessments that must be completed in Capstone. Students who do not pass the assessments within the allotted time frame will have to re-take the Capstone course the next semester.

We understand that being a student is only one part of your life, and we would like to be of assistance to you in any way we can in making adjustments as you progress through the program, please keep us informed if you have questions or problems arise. We are available during posted office hours; please call to schedule an appointment. We are here so that you are successful in the CIM Program.

This handbook has been designed to provide you with initial information about the expectations from yourself and the faculty. Please contact us if you have any questions regarding materials in this handbook.

I look forward to working with each of you as you progress toward a career as a cancer information management professional.

Sincerely,

Carrie Jackson, M.Ed., RHIA
