Health Information Management, AAS


Campus: Online*

Graduates of the Health Information Management (HIM) AAS will be prepared for entry level positions in a physician’s office, hospital setting, health insurance organization or coding company. The program is offered in an online setting, except for the Professional Practice Experiences, which require a student to be available on site at a healthcare organization working with Health Information Management professionals. There are two 96-hour Professional Practice Experiences scheduled in the program.

*Students must complete the two on-site practicums (HIT 355 and HIT 555) and will work with a program representative on finding an approved on-site location.

The Health Information Management (HIM) AAS is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). Graduates are eligible to write for the national certification exam - Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) given by the American Health Information Management Association.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Health Information Management program, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of data structure, health record content and information governance.
  2. Demonstrate proper procedures for accessing, using, disclosing and securing health information.
  3. Demonstrate proper procedures of privacy and security of health information.
  4. Utilize health informatics, analytics, and data use in health information management.
  5. Validate assignment of diagnostic and procedural codes.
  6. describe and demonstrate the revenue cycle management and clinical documentation process.
  7. Demonstrate processes impacting health information.
  8. Identify the impact of law and policy on healthcare.
  9. Demonstrate fundamental leadership, organizational management, and leadership skills.
