Early Childhood Teacher Licensure Transfer Major, AA

Campus: Clinton, Muscatine, and Scott Community Colleges

Early childhood teachers guide the learning of children from preschool through second grade. The transfer major in Early Childhood Teacher Licensure provides a broad education in the liberal arts, with an emphasis in childhood development and education. This program is designed for students planning to transfer to a four-year school with a major in early childhood education.

Transfer Institutions: Iowa State University, Northern Iowa University, Iowa Wesleyan University, Mount Mercy University, St. Ambrose University, and Upper Iowa University. Some of these institutions may have additional requirements. Please see your advisor for more information.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Early Childhood Teacher Licensure Transfer Major program, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate positive guidance techniques with children.
  2. Write developmentally appropriate lesson plans for young children.
  3. Critique ethical behaviors of an early learning teacher in an early learning environment.
  4. Analyze personal ethical behaviors while teaching young children.
  5. Construct a safe and healthy learning space in compliance with ADA regulations.
  6. Describe positive relationships between families, early learning environments, and community partners.
  7. Demonstrate professionalism in the workplace, which includes dependability, responsibility, and working with all stakeholders respectfully.

GEO-121 is recommended for the Early Childhood Teacher Licensure Transfer Major.

POL-111 is recommended for the Early Childhood Teacher Licensure Transfer Major.

Select an Economics or Political Science course (3 credits)

Select a Psychology or Sociology course (3 credits)

Mathematics and Natural Sciences (8 credits required)


Math requirements are met through the discipline requirements for the Early Childhood Teacher Licensure Transfer Major.

ENV courses are not recommended for the Early Childhood Teacher Licensure Transfer Major.

Computer Skills (3 credits required)


Students may choose to demonstrate computer skills proficiency by exam and complete an elective in lieu of a computer skills course.

EDU-213 is recommended for the Early Childhood Teacher Licensure Transfer Major.

An extra science course may be needed for transfer to University of Northern Iowa.

Students choose electives according to their needs and interests and the requirements of their intended transfer college to complete the 62 credit hours required of an Associate of Arts degree. While electives generally are chosen from any Arts and Science course numbered above 100, a maximum of 4 credit hours in SDV courses and 16 credit hours in career technical courses may be applied toward an AA.
