Animal Science Transfer Major, AS

Campus: Muscatine Community College

Animal Science prepares students for occupations in those areas of agriculture that involve livestock production and related agribusinesses. The transfer major in Animal Science has been designed to provide a broad education with an emphasis in beef cattle science, math and the natural sciences, and liberal arts/humanities. This program is for students interested in transferring to a four-year institution with a major in Animal Science.

Transfer Institutions: Iowa State University. This institution may have additional requirements. Please see your advisor for more information.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Animal Science Transfer Major program, students will be able to:

  1. Analyze livestock production management practices. 
  2. Identify the management practices of cattle feeding and cow-calf enterprises. 
  3. Create marketing and breeding plans. 
  4. Describe how body systems serve to facilitate essential life processes. 
  5. Explain the relationship between biological structure and function.

Select one course from any two of the following categories.

PHI-105 is recommended for the Animal Science Transfer Major.

Mathematics and Natural Science (13 credits required)


BIO-186 and CHM-166 are recommended for the Animal Science Transfer Major.

Computer Skills (3 credits required)


Students may choose to demonstrate computer skills proficiency by exam and complete an elective in lieu of a computer skills course.

US Diversity and International Perspectives course options for Iowa State University are recommended for the Animal Science Transfer Major.

Students choose electives according to their needs and interests and the requirements of their intended transfer college to complete the 62 credit hours required of an Associate of Science degree. While electives generally are chosen from any Arts and Science course numbered above 100, a maximum of 4 credit hours in SDV courses and 16 credit hours in career technical courses may be applied toward an AS.
