Diagnostic Medical Sonography, AAS

The Sonography AAS program prepares graduates to enter the field of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS). They are prepared to work under the supervision of physicians, utilizing medical ultrasound techniques to gather sonographic data used to diagnose a variety of conditions and diseases. The program includes instruction in obtaining, reviewing, and integrating patient histories and data; patient instruction and care; anatomic, physiologic, and pathologic data recording; sonographic data processing; sonography equipment operation; and professional standards and ethics.

Graduates are eligible to sit for certification examinations by the (national) American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).

Admission to the Sonography program, requires students to have previously earned an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in an allied health major, or to have completed a baccalaureate degree or higher in any major. Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program, students will be able to:

  1. Communicate effectively, showing respect to practices of diversity, equity, and inclusion, both verbally and in writing.
  2. Employ diagnostic sonographic technique according to national sonography accrediting body standards and individual department protocol.  
  3. Demonstrate critical thinking skills, professional decision-making, and/or psychomotor skills necessary for safe and competent practice. 
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of ultrasound physical principles and instrumentation.
  5. Demonstrate knowledge of cross-sectional human anatomy, human physiology, pathology and pathophysiology as it relates to normal and abnormal sonographic imaging. 
  6. Provide quality patient care and comfort to a diverse patient population using ethical and professional standards abiding by HIPAA guidelines.
  7. Successfully complete the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) credentialing examinations. 
  8. Adhere to the Code of Ethics and Scope of Practice ascribed to by the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
  9. Recognize and use resources to enhance self-development and professional growth.
