AGH 261 - Specialty Crops

This course is an introduction to production of specialty crops, and the theoretical and practical knowledge required for successfully producing them. Topics will include basic principles and practices of production, site selection, soil techniques, irrigation management, equipment and tools, integrated pest management, season extension strategies, postharvest handling and food safety, marketing, and basic business planning for specialty crop enterprises. 

SLOs:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Analyze soil sample results to make decisions on soil fertility needs.
  • Demonstrate growing techniques for the most common midwest specialty crops. 
  • Demonstrate the use of three different irrigation techniques.
  • Apply specialty crop safe handling techniques to a variety of growing situations.
