ADI 345 - Obstetrical Sonography Credit(s) 4.00 Lecture Hours: 4.00 This course will introduce students to the sonographic evaluation of the gravid uterus. Obstetrical imaging focuses on embryonic and fetal development and sonographic appearances of fetal and extrafetal anatomy throughout the gestational period. This course emphasizes an understanding of the fertilization process, clinical indications for obstetrical sonography and the sonographic appearances of the normal and abnormal gravid uterus specific to each trimester of pregnancy. The effect of maternal disease on the developing fetus as well as the sonographic complications and appearances during the post-partum period will be studied. This course is one of two courses replacing ADI 357.
Prerequisite(s): A minimum of C in ADI 340 and ADI 850 . SLOs: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Explain general patient preparation for sonographic imaging procedures of the gravid uterus.

Evaluate clinical history and physical findings from the patient’s history or medical record that are relevant to the performance obstetrical sonographic procedures.

Select appropriate equipment and standard protocols as required for sonographic evaluation of the gravid or non-gravid female reproductive tract.

Differentiate between normal and selected pathological conditions of the gravid uterus and the adnexal structures as demonstrated on sonographic images.

Explain sonographic biometric evaluation of the developing fetus.

Identify the normal appearance of the developing fetus based on the stage of pregnancy as demonstrated on sonographic images.

Distinguish selected congenital abnormalities and pathological conditions of the fetus and extrafetal environment as seen on sonographic images.

Summarize the role of sonography in the post-partum period.
