SPC 101 - Fundamentals of Oral Communication

This course explores the fundamentals of oral communication theory and practice. Students will survey the foundations and functions of communication styles including: public speaking, interpersonal communication, small-group communication, and intercultural communication. Practice in the preparation and presentation of projects demonstrating these oral communication styles will be required.

SLOs:
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Collaborate effectively in a small group.

  • Design and evaluate small group and individual projects.

  • Examine and manage conflict with others.

  • Compare and contrast effective communication styles.

  • Identify and examine cultural differences and similarities.

  • Implement diversity in communication climate.

  • Develop verbal communication skills.

  • Develop effective listening skills.

  • Develop physical and nonverbal communication skills.

  • Interpret basic nonverbal communication messages.
