PSY 223 - Child and Adolescent Psychology

This course focuses on the psychological development of children and adolescents, exploring the cognitive, emotional, social, and physical changes that occur from infancy through the teenage years. Students will examine key developmental theories and milestones, as well as the influences of family, culture, and society on growth and behavior. 

SLOs:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Analyze the diversity of approaches in child development research and theory.

  • Recognize genetic, biological, environmental, and sociocultural influences on development from the prenatal period through adolescence.

  • Identify and discuss some of the most important aspects of normal physical development during each period of development.

  • Identify and discuss theories of cognitive development during each developmental period.

  • Identify and discuss the forces that shape psychosocial development from birth through adolescence.

  • Locate and critically evaluate recent research on contemporary child development issues.

  • Apply child development research and theory to real-life scenarios involving children at different developmental stages through reflection papers, portfolios, classroom demonstrations, and other methods within the classroom.
