HIT 422 - Medico-Legal Ethics

This course is an introduction to the concepts of medical law and ethics for allied health care practitioners. Topics including criminal and civil acts, contracts, negligence and ethical concepts as they relate to the medical profession, health information management, Health Insurance & Portability Accountability Act (HIPAA) and other health care legislative rulings are discussed.

Prerequisite(s): A minimum grade of C- in HIT 205 HIT 305 , and HIT 355

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 

  • Apply privacy strategies to health information. 
  • Apply security strategies to health information. 
  • Identify compliance requirements through health information life cycle. 
  • Describe concepts of managing data in regards to protection, storage, and validation. 
  • Apply legal processes impacting health information.
  • Demonstrate compliance with external forces. 
  • Identify the components of risk management related to health information management. 
  • Identify the impact of policy on healthcare. 
  • Assess ethical standards of practice.
