CFR 100 - Introduction to Computer Forensics

This course is designed to acquaint the student with the field of computer forensics, investigation tools, and techniques. Students will explore the set up of an investigator’s office and laboratory, as well as examine what computer forensic hardware and software is available. Topics covered include procedures for identification, preservation, and extraction of electronic evidence, auditing and investigation of network and host intrusions and forensic tools.

Prerequisite(s): NET 420

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Understand the computer forensics process.

  • Develop knowledge of computer forensics and investigation as a profession.

  • Examine personal computer operating system architectures and disk structures.

  • Demonstrate proficiency in how to set up an investigator’s office and laboratory.

  • Identify available forensic software and tools.

  • Apply knowledge of the importance of digital evidence and how to process a crime and incident scenes.

  • Apply the process preserving computer data.

  • Explore the need to extract data for investigations as possible evidence in a court of law.
