DEA 254 - Dental Science I

This course examines oral histology and embryology, head and neck anatomy, and tooth morphology as applicable to the practice of dental assisting. In addition, an introduction to the structure and function to the human body systems in health and disease will be presented.

Prerequisite(s): Admission into the Dental Assisting Program.
SLOs:
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Identify all teeth and describe the functional anatomy of each tooth.

  • Describe the fetal development of gross anatomical structures of the face, oral, and nasal cavities.

  • Explain the embryological development of the teeth.

  • Identify the anatomical structures and landmarks of the oral cavity, face, and nasal cavities.

  • Discuss the relationship of teeth to one another, to the bones, muscles, and nerves closely associated with the dentition.

  • Describe the muscles of facial expression and muscles of mastication as they relate to function.

  • Locate and discuss the function of the salivary glands.

  • Discuss the nervous, vascular, and lymphatic tissues associated with the oral cavity as they relate to the practice of dentistry.

  • Relate the spread of infection to knowledge of oral tissue spaces.

  • Explain why understanding physiology is important to the dental assistant.
