PSY 246 - Introduction to Counseling Skills

This course is designed to provide students with three essential components relative to the fields of counseling and human services. These are 1) to attain a foundation in the theories of psychotherapy, 2) to learn “helping” skills so that students can begin to practice micro-counseling techniques in the classroom, and 3) to gain knowledge about the large number of occupational choices within the field of counseling and human services. In this course, selected prominent theories of psychotherapy, which provide guidelines for understanding human problems and for selecting interventions for these problems, will be studied.

SLOs:
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Describe the history and philosophy of counseling.

  • Identify the different roles types of counselors.

  • Explain the similarities and differences between counseling and therapy.

  • Compare and contrast the major theoretical perspectives in explaining why a disorder exists and how to treat that disorder.

  • Summarize ethical, legal, and personal values that high performing counselors support.

  • Develop, implement, and practice a treatment plan for solution-focused counseling.

  • Explain the stages and steps in the counseling process.

  • Construct a personal educational development plan to include colleges, costs, licenses, and credentials required to practice.
