PHS 172 - Physical Geology

This course is a survey course in physical geology including the Earth’s physical systems, the rock cycle, the hydrologic cycle, and the theory of plate tectonics. Volcanism, earthquakes, erosion, and geologic resources are included. The emphasis in the lab is on reading geologic maps and the study of common rocks and minerals. This course satisfies a general education requirement in the Natural Sciences Area.

SLOs:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Describe the rock cycle and Earth’s interior.

  • Demonstrate familiarity with geologic time and structural geology.

  • Explain the changes to Earth caused by nature and by man.

  • Demonstrate familiarity with plate tectonic theory and seismology.

  • Describe the effects of man’s interaction with the planet regarding erosion and climate change.

  • Use critical thinking to evaluate scientific information to make informed decisions.
