LIT 185 - Contemporary Literature Credit(s) 3.00 Lecture Hours: 3.00 This course focuses on works written since World War II. The effects of culture, environment and mass media on literature and its four major genres (short fiction, poetry, novel and drama) are explored in detail through critical reading and writing. This course satisfies a general education requirement in the Arts and Humanities Area.
Prerequisite(s): ENG 105 or ENG 107 SLOs: Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:-
Identify each genre’s characteristic elements.

Use these elements in oral and written analysis of literature.

Recognize the relationship between analysis and appreciation.

Write formal critical essays in which they evaluate literature, connecting it to other works and to their own ideas, experiences, and opinions.

Recognize the impact of historical events and trends on literary expression.

Respond to the readings through informal writing and through classroom discussion.

The major goal of Contemporary Literature is to enrich the students’ reading experiences through examination of the elements necessary for analysis of the four major genres of literature.

Students will also develop the ability to appreciate literature as they become more familiar with works of contemporary authors.
