LIT 130 - African American Literature Credit(s) 3.00 Lecture Hours: 3.00 This course is a survey of African American literature beginning in the 18th century and continuing into the present. Genres will include the short story, poetry, the novel, and drama. Emphasis is placed on formal, thematic, historical, cultural, and critical elements of African American literature, as well as the relationship between African American literature and the human condition. This course satisfies a general education requirement in the Arts and Humanities Area.This course has been designated as diversity rich.
Prerequisite(s): ENG 105 or ENG 107 SLOs: Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Define the characteristics of different genres in African American literature.

Identify thematic concerns across genres in African American literature.

Analyze the impact of historical, cultural, and critical context on the formal and thematic elements of African American literary works.

Identify how race, gender, and class shape literature.

Assess the relationship between the American literary canon and African American literature.

Illustrate the value of diversity through an exploration of literature.

Identify the impacts of slavery and institutionalized oppression on the creation of African American literature.

Compose formal critical essays in which they evaluate literature, connect it to other works, incorporate personal experience, explore its contexts, and assess its relationship to the human condition.
