LIT 110 - American Literature to Mid-1800’s

This course examines a diverse group of American authors writing in different genres from pre-Colonial times through 1865.Themes, philosophies, and styles in relation to their social and cultural contexts will be analyzed using basic critical approaches and introductory literary theory in class discussions and through writing. Topics include the impact of colonization on indigenous peoples, as well as the effects and experience of slavery and the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

Prerequisite(s): ENG 105 or ENG 107

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate familiarity with diverse American authors from pre-Colonial times through 1865.
  • Analyze American literary works in relation to their historical, social, and intellectual context, including the history of colonization and slavery.
  • Distinguish how factors related to class, institutional power structures, and changing cultural traditions influence writers from each period. 
  • Explain the contribution of women, indigenous, and African-American writers to American literature.
  • Distinguish literary themes, philosophies, and styles used from pre-Colonial times through 1865.
  • Compose formal critical essays in which they evaluate literature, connect it to other works, explore its contexts, and assess its relationship to the human condition.
