This is a foundation course which covers the fundamentals of French language and culture. The course is designed for the student with no knowledge of the language. The communication skills of reading, writing and speaking will be developed to aid the student in oral proficiency. Each unit will deal with specific aspects of French culture. This course may satisfy a general education requirement in the Cultural/Historical Perspectives Area.

Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Greet and respond to others in French
Make introductions, using name, age, nationality and profession
Discuss their families, describing each member
Discuss their jobs and job situations
Discuss where they live
Discuss shopping in France
Give and follow directions and use the Metro
Discuss different modes of transportation at home and abroad
Book a hotel room in France
Describe their homes
Discuss leisure-time activities
