CLS 121 - Studies in Non-Western Culture Credit(s) 3.00 Lecture Hours: 3.00 This course is an interdisciplinary humanities course that will introduce students to selected regions and countries of the designated region. Regions are limited to East, South, Southeast and Southwest Asia; Africa; Oceania; the Caribbean Region; and Native American Cultures. Emphasis will be placed on cultural, historical and geographical perspectives and the arts, issues and events that help to define and shape that part of the world.
SLOs: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Summarize key historical events in the selected region.
- Explain how history relates to current values and issues.
- Identify selected geographical and topographical boundaries and relate these to traditional ethnic borders.
- Explain various economic, social and cultural factures of specific societies.
- Show examples of specific literary and artistic contributions to the rest of the world.
- Explain how the value of religions and spiritual ideologies impact the present and future focus of peoples of the region.
- Evaluate their own society’s impact on specific cultures of the region.
- Discuss the interdependencies among world cultures.
- Summarize how colonialism and continued economic and political involvement have affected the evolution of specific cultures of the selected region.
