Political Science is the study of governments, public policies, and political processes. The transfer major in Political Science has been designed to use both humanistic and social scientific perspectives to examine the ideal forms of government and how power and resources are allocated in societies throughout the world. This program is for students interested in transferring to a four-year institution with a major related to Political Science.
Transfer Institutions: Iowa State University, State University of Iowa, and Northern Iowa University. Some of these institutions may have additional requirements. Please see your advisor for more information.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the Political Science Transfer Major program, students will be able to:
- Evaluate fundamental global, national, and regional governmental structures, dynamics, and policies.
- Describe the political science methods used to analyze social phenomena in the diversity of human perspectives.
- Demonstrate an understanding of history and development of a nation’s government, government powers, Constitutional powers, governmental institutions, and international relations.
- Demonstrate an understanding of rights, participation, and impact of individuals, groups, and institutions in political systems.
- Analyze international relations, power and security dynamics, economic concepts and strategies, and theories.

Electives (up to 12 credits required)
Select coursework based on content area/endorsement. Students choose electives according to their needs and interests and the requirements of their intended transfer college to complete the 62 credit hours required of an Associate of Arts degree. While electives generally are chosen from any Arts and Science course numbered above 100, a maximum of 4 credit hours in SDV courses and 16 credit hours in career technical courses may be applied toward an AA.
