Biology Transfer Major, AS

Campus: Clinton, Muscatine & Scott Community Colleges

Biology is a science focused on the study of life and living organisms. The transfer major in Biology has been designed to provide a broad education with emphasis in the sciences of biology and chemistry, mathematics, the social sciences, and liberal arts/humanities. This program is for students interested transferring to a four-year institution with a major related to the life sciences.

Transfer Institutions: Iowa State University, State University of Iowa, Northern Iowa University, Clarke University, Iowa Wesleyan University, Mount Mercey University, St. Ambrose University, and University of Dubuque. Some of these institutions may have additional requirements. Please see your advisor for more information.

Communications (9 credits required)


SPC-112 is recommended for the Biology Transfer Major.

Select a Composition I course (3 credits)

Select a Speech course (3 credits)

Arts and Humanities (6 credits required)


Select one course from any two of the following categories.

Select a Humanities course (3 credits)

Select a Fine Arts course (3 credits)

Cultural Historical Perspectives (3 credits required)


Social Sciences (3 credits required)


Mathematics and Natural Sciences (2 credits required)


Select a Mathematics and Natural Sciences course (2 credits)

Computer Skills (3 credits required)


Students may choose to demonstrate computer skills proficiency by exam and complete an elective in lieu of a computer skills course.

Select a Computer Skills course (3 credits)

Electives (up to 14 credits required)


Additional math or science is recommended for students intending to transfer.

Students choose electives according to their needs and interests and the requirements of their intended transfer college to complete the 62 credit hours required of an Associate of Science degree. While electives generally are chosen from any Arts and Science course numbered above 100, a maximum of 4 credit hours in SDV courses and 16 credit hours in career technical courses may be applied toward an AS.
