AGV 146 - Large Animal Care

This course will provide students with information regarding the large animal industry, management, and husbandry. Emphasis will be on diseases and common clinical procedures including restraint, diagnostic testing, bandaging, surgery and anesthesia, fluid therapy, medical nursing, and euthanasia and necropsy.

Prerequisite(s): A minimum grade of C in AGV 118 , AGV 119 , and AGV 130 
SLOs:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Discuss the livestock industry and production goals for large animals.

  • Explain how to restrain and assist in surgery.

  • Identify livestock reproduction and its many aspects as it relates to the large animal industry.

  • Identify different feed stuffs and how they are used in livestock nutrition

  • Explain general management considerations for hospitalization, examination procedures, and record keeping

  • Detail livestock husbandry as it pertains to each large animal species.

  • Explain various surgery and anesthesia procedures and considerations for large animals.

  • Outline and perform common procedures used for diagnosing and treating large animals.
