CHM 165 - General Chemistry I Credit(s) 4.00 Lecture Hours: 3.00 Lab Hours: 2.00 This course is the first in a sequence of two general chemistry courses for students in pre-med, pre-chiro, pre-vet, pre-dental, pre-pharmacy, pre-engineering, other physical or biological sciences, or liberal arts. Topics include dimensional analysis, stoichiometry, gases, atomic structure and periodicity, solutions, chemical bonding, and thermochemistry. This course satisfies a general education requirement in the Natural Sciences Area.
Prerequisite(s): CHM 110 , CHM 122 , or high school chemistry within the last five years and MAT 067 . SLOs: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
-
Explain basic terms, concepts, processes, and systems in general chemistry.
-
Demonstrate effective laboratory skills in the use and handling of chemical equipment and compounds.
-
Solve quantitative general chemistry problems.
-
Explain how chemical structure determines compound properties particular to general chemistry.
-
Describe the structure and composition of matter.
-
Use critical thinking to evaluate scientific information to make informed decisions.
