CIM 210 - Oncology Coding and Staging Systems

This course will focus on the basic concepts of coding and staging of malignant neoplasms. It will provide a general overview of the International Classification of Diseases in Oncology, 3rd Ed. (ICD-O-3) topography and morphology codes. Use of Solid Tumor Rules (STR) and the Hematopoietic Database for assigning primary site and histology codes will be stressed.

Concepts for the extent of disease used by physicians and cancer surveillance organizations to determine treatment and survival will be emphasized, including:

  • American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) TNM staging
  • Surveillance, Epidemiology, & End Results (SEER) Summary Stage
  • Extent of Disease and Site Specific Data Items


Prerequisite(s): A minimum grade of C in BIO 173 .
