FLS 231 - Intermediate Spanish I

This course is equivalent to third-level college Spanish. It reviews the fundamentals of language communication and further improves on idiomatic usages, speaking and understanding. Readings and multimedia presentations on Hispanic culture, current events and literary offerings are integrated in texts and assignments. Exams will test oral, cultural, comprehension and written skills. This course may satisfy a general education requirement in the Cultural/Historical Perspectives Area.

Prerequisite(s): FLS 142  or 2 years of high school Spanish

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Interpret information in conversations and in writing on a variety of topics.  
  • Use complete sentences and series of sentences to relate to prepared or researched topics in writing, and speaking.
  • Demonstrate asking and answering follow-up questions.
  • Explain the main idea and key information from short fictional, nonfictional and informational texts.
  • Express preferences, feelings, or opinions and provide basic advice on a variety of topics. 
  • Compare products and practices in their own and other cultures to interpret and synthesize cultural perspectives.
