Paraeducator Certificate

Location(s): Scott Community College, Muscatine Community College, Clinton Community College, Online


The Paraeducator Preparation Program prepares students for employment in K-12 school settings as paraeductors or teacher associates. The program combines college coursework with required practicum experiences in general education and special education classrooms. Upon successful completion, students are eligible to apply for the Paraeducator Generalist Certification through the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners.

This state-approved, two-course program provides students with enhanced knowledge and skills aligned with the professional duties of paraeductors. The curriculum emphasizes essential skills for paraeducators to support student success, including classroom management, collaboration, effective communication, professionalism, and ethical decision-making in the classroom. Graduates of the program will be equipped to support teachers by contribuing to a safe classroom climate, assisting with a range of learner needs, supporting instruction, and engaging in postive, professional communication with students and fellow educators.

Students who complete the required coursework with the minimum of 2.0 GPA and complete practicum hours will be eligible to earn a Paraeducator Generalist Certificate. Additional requirements to enter the program can be found at Professional Licensure Information | EICC.

Upon completion of this program, students are eligible to apply for their Paraeducator License through the Iowa Department of Education.
