Veterinary Technician, AAS

The Veterinary Technician program prepares students to enter the job market as assistants to veterinarians. New technologies in anesthesia, laboratory equipment, diagnostic testing, and medical treatment have vastly improved animal care. To prepare for these responsibilities, the vet tech program at MCC is designed to enable its graduates to perform a variety of functions necessary for the care of animals.

The Veterinary Technician program is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Veterinary Technician program, students will be able to:

  1. Perform anesthesia skills applicable to the role of a veterinary technician.
  2. Perform surgical skills applicable to the role of a veterinary technician.
  3. Utilize standard diagnostic laboratory equipment and techniques within the veterinary industry.
  4. Utilize diagnostic imaging devices and techniques applicable to the role of a veterinary technician.
  5. Evaluate the physical status of the veterinary patient and perform nursing care procedures.
  6. Identify and utilize the most common pharmaceuticals used in veterinary medicine.

Students who successfully complete this AAS program are eligible to sit for the Iowa Veterinary Technician Examination and the National Veterinary Technician Exam (NVTE).
