American Sign Language - English Interpreting, AAS

Campus: Scott Community College and Online

The American Sign Language-English Interpreting AAS is an “advanced standing” program in that a student must complete EICC’s Deaf Studies  Certificate before entering the AAS program. It contains practical coursework for gaining proficiency in sign language interpreting through classroom style lectures, practicum and hands-on experience.

After the completion of the program, students can begin work at an entry-level position in the educational setting or freelance as a sign language interpreter. As professional interpreters, they will provide access for consumers through communication facilitation and cultural mediation in a variety of settings.

The ASL-EI program prepares students to sit for the following nationally recognized certification exams:

  • Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA)
  • The Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) National Interpreter Certification (NIC)
  • Board of Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) certification

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the American Sign Language - English Interpreting program, students will be able to:

  1. Express message with accurate usage of English lexicon and syntax.
  2. Express message with accurate usage of American Sign Language lexicon and syntax.
  3. Analyze American Sign Language and spoken English discourse for contextual meaning.
  4. Analyze cultural aspects of language usage.
  5. Evaluate professional preparation for specialty fields of interpreting.
  6. Create an interpretation from spoken English to American Sign Language maintaining the meaning and intent of the source message.
  7. Create an interpretation from American Sign Language to spoken English maintaining the meaning and intent of the source message.
  8. Generate an ethical response to a simulated interpreting situation using professional ethical standards.
