Social Work Transfer Major, AA

The field of social work promotes human growth and development through education, public health, human welfare, and social justice. The transfer major in Social Work has been designed to teach students the qualities and characteristics of effective human service professionals that view clients as whole persons in the context of their family, culture, and community using a biopsychosocial perspective. This program is for students interested in transferring to a four-year institution with a major related to Social Work.

Transfer Institutions: Iowa State University, State University of Iowa, and Northern Iowa. Some of these institutions may have additional requirements. Please see your advisor for more information.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Social Work Transfer Major program, students will be able to:

  1. Create organized paperwork, reports, and documentation.
  2. Demonstrate a practical knowledge of organizational networks to assist clients.
  3. Identify social sensitivity and cultural competency in practice.
  4. Identify social Science methods used in social research.
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of social welfare concepts, history, and social welfare’s role in society.
  6. Identify major social models and fields of social work and service programs.
  7. Implement professional standards and ethics.
  8. Demonstrate an understanding of marriage and family history, concepts, models, theories, and paradigms.
  9. Analyze sociology’s contributions to social science fields.

Select coursework based on content area/endorsement.

Students choose electives according to their needs and interests and the requirements of their intended transfer college to complete the 62 credit hours required of an Associate of Arts degree. While electives generally are chosen from any Arts and Science course numbered above 100, a maximum of 4 credit hours in SDV courses and 16 credit hours in career technical courses may be applied toward an AA.
