Psychology Transfer Major, AA

Campus: Clinton, Muscatine, and Scott Community Colleges

Psychology is the scientific study of the mental processes and behaviors of humans and animals. The transfer major in Psychology has been designed to provide a broad education with an emphasis in general, social, and developmental psychology, the social sciences, and liberal arts/humanities. This program is for students interested in transferring to a four-year institution with a major in Psychology.

Transfer Institutions: Iowa State University, State University of Iowa, Northern Iowa University, Clarke University, Mount Mercy University, St. Ambrose University, University of Dubuque, and Upper Iowa University. Some of these institutions may have additional requirements. Please see your advisor for more information.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Psychology Transfer Major program, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of psychological concepts, principles, domains, and applications.
  2. Utilize scientific reasoning to analyze and interpret basic psychological research.
  3. Engage in innovative and integrative thinking and problem solving.
  4. Apply values and ethical standards that build community and interpersonal communication skills.
  5. Demonstrate effective writing, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
  6. Apply psychological principles to enhance professional, group, and personal growth.

Math requirements are met through the discipline requirements for the Psychology Transfer Major.

CHM-122 or PHY-162 is recommended for the Psychology Transfer Major. CHM-122 is recommended for students transferring to State University of Iowa.

Computer Skills (3 credits required)


Students may choose to demonstrate computer skills proficiency by exam and complete an elective in lieu of a computer skills course.

Electives (up to 12 credits required)


Additional math or science is recommended for students intending to transfer.

Students choose electives according to their needs and interests and the requirements of their intended transfer college to complete the 62 credit hours required of an Associate of Arts degree. While electives generally are chosen from any Arts and Science course numbered above 100, a maximum of 4 credit hours in SDV courses and 16 credit hours in career technical courses may be applied toward an AA.
