CIS 120 - Ethics and Policy in Artificial Intelligence

This course explores the ethical, legal, and social implications of artificial intelligence (AI) systems, emphasizing responsible AI development and governance. Students will critically examine foundational AI ethics principles, data privacy issues, algorithmic bias, surveillance technologies, and the societal impact of autonomous systems. Special attention will be given to global regulatory frameworks, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and emerging national AI policies. Through real-world case studies, policy analysis, and applied ethical frameworks, students will develop the skills to evaluate and shape AI systems to align with public trust, fairness, transparency, and accountability.  No

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 

  • Describe core concepts of AI ethics and their social impact.
  • Explain global regulatory policies related to AI, including GDPR. 
  • Identify and evaluate bias, fairness, and discrimination issues in AI systems.
  • Apply responsible AI frameworks, including principles of transparency, explainability, and accountability.
  • Analyze case studies to assess ethical dilemmas and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Propose policy recommendations for responsible AI deployment.
  • Communicate AI ethics concepts effectively in both written and oral forms.
