ASL 171 - American Sign Language II

This course is designed to build on basic interpersonal communication skills utilizing conversational American Sign Language (ASL) learned in American Sign Language  . Exploration of American Deaf cultural beliefs, values and attitudes, and an appreciation of perspectives and contributions of Deaf Americans in the areas of arts and history will be continued to enhance student understanding of the unique perspectives expressed by members of the Deaf Community. Students planning to earn the Deaf Studies  Certificate must also take the corresponding laboratory course,   American Sign Language II Lab.

Prerequisite(s): A minimum grade of C- in  
Recommended and Non-Course Requisites: Course has two-day residency requirements. Students taking online course are responsible for scheduling and completing independently.

Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate expressive and receptive ASL communication skills.

  • Analyze knowledge and understanding of Deaf Culture.

  • Employ ASL to connect to a wide range of topics.

  • Analyze the nature of language and culture.

  • Employ ASL to participate in Deaf Community events.
