This course offers an in-depth study of various topics in film studies. It is topical and the subject will vary from semester to semester. Its purpose is to provide understanding of how film and society interact through in-depth analysis of one significant area of film study. Topics offered and studied can include genre theory, specific genres (horror, science fiction, social drama, etc.), film adaptation of forms of literature, moral themes, documentary film, eras in film, etc. Regardless of the focus, all film topics examine the relationship between the subject and the culture producing the films, identifying operating principles and contextual forces, and apply these concepts to specific films.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Identify the various major periods, personalities, auteurs, national cinemas (if relevant) and films in the specific topic for this class.
Identify the characteristics (e.g., themes and styles) of major periods/iterations in the evolution of the specific topic for this class.
Analyze the relevant socio/cultural issues of the specific topic for this class.
Apply relevant film theory to explain how a given film fits within the selected topic for this class.
Apply relevant theory to analyze how a particular topic functions and operates within cinematic and cultural systems of meaning.
