This course introduces students to the field of computer forensics, including investigative tools and techniques. Students will examine how to set up and manage an investigator’s office and laboratory, as well as evaluate available forensic hardware and software. Topics include procedures for identifying and preserving digital evidence, extracting electronic data, auditing and investigating network and host intrusions, and using forensic tools to support investigations. Prerequisite(s): SLOs: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Explain the computer forensics process.

Develop knowledge of computer forensics and investigation as a profession.

Examine personal computer operating system architectures and disk structures.

Demonstrate proficiency in how to set up an investigator’s office and laboratory.

Identify available forensic software and tools.

Apply knowledge of the importance of digital evidence and how to process a crime and incident scenes.

Apply the process preserving computer data.

Explore the need to extract data for investigations as possible evidence in a court of law.
