This course provides the student with a basic knowledge of major concepts in business law. Topics may include an introduction to the legal environment (ethics, the workings of the United States Court system and constitutional law), contracts, employer/employee relations, consumer protection, product liability, social media and intellectual property law, torts, criminal law, and wills. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Develop a comprehensive awareness of the legal and ethical environment in which business must operate in the United States.
Define and explain the basic rights and responsibilities contained in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
Recognize the legal rights and obligations of consumers, producers and those that manufacture products for the marketplace.
Identify and explain the characteristics of, and remedies to, various types of contracts and contractual agreements.
Identify and explain basic torts and crimes as they relate to the business environment.
Identify the characteristics of personal, real and intellectual property.
Make use of information concerning how wills, trusts and estates laws can be used to protect a person’s assets and the interests of their family or business.
Identify the different types of risk protection available to individuals and businesses.
Identify and explain federal statutes and case law concerning the administration of modern employment law.
Identify some of the current ethical concerns involved in making legal and business decisions.
Explain the general process of a trial and be able to explain the different types of courts that operate in the United States.
