ART 101 - Art Appreciation

This course is an introduction to the history of paintings, sculpture, and architecture. Emphasis is on the appreciation of well-known works of art in a variety of media. The artist and the creative process are explored. This course satisfies a general education requirement in the Arts and Humanities Area.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Discuss a chronological framework for the evolution of visual art.
Explain the linkages between visual art and the student’s everyday life.
Identify art which has evolved from the European and the non-European visual traditions.
Analyze a work of visual art through the recognition of elements of style.
Explain a work of visual art through the recognition of elements of style.
Identify those forces (history, culture, and technology) which influence the development of content and style in the works of art.
