ART 101 - Art Appreciation

This course is an introduction to the history of paintings, sculpture, and architecture. Emphasis is on the appreciation of well-known works of art in a variety of media. The artist and the creative process are explored. This course satisfies a general education requirement in the Arts and Humanities Area.

SLOs:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Discuss a chronological framework for the evolution of visual art.

  • Explain the linkages between visual art and the student’s everyday life.

  • Identify art which has evolved from the European and the non-European visual traditions.

  • Analyze a work of visual art through the recognition of elements of style.

  • Explain a work of visual art through the recognition of elements of style.

  • Identify those forces (history, culture, and technology) which influence the development of content and style in the works of art.

  • Evaluate the intellectual and emotional interpretations of the visual arts.

  • Explain the intellectual and emotional interpretations of the visual arts.
