AGP 420 - Geospatial Data Collection

This course introduces students to global positioning systems and how they can be used in collecting relevant agricultural data. Students learn about Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment, related field procedures, and preliminary analysis of GPS data. Emphasis is on GPS applications related to mapping and decision-making projects. The primary purpose is to demonstrate the various tools available in industry to assist Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Specialists, Precision Ag Technicians, Agronomists, and Soil Surveyors in collecting accurate field data. The most important equipment used in this course will consist of GPS receivers and devices for spatial data activities.

Explain what spatial data is and its usefulness in decision making.
Identify the components of a GPS and digital geographical positioning system (DGPS) datalogging system.
Identify and create a structure of data to be collected in the field.
Identify the process of transferring data from a datalogger to computer.
Identify a variety of tools to collect data in the field.
Identify the concepts of exporting and importing data formats.
Recognize the process of using data from the internet.
Recognize the process of using data from commercial sources.
