MUS 120 - Music Theory I

This course introduces students to the basic elements of music, music reading and elementary ear training. Notation skills are emphasized.

SLOs:
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate basic keyboard, sight singing, rhythm and ear training skills.

  • Draw pitches on the staff.

  • Identify major and minor key signatures and scales.

  • Notate and count simple and compound rhythms.

  • Identify and write intervals and chords.

  • Recognize all cadences.

  • Write and harmonize a melody.

  • Analyze elementary harmonic progressions.

  • Identify non-harmonic tones.
