MUS 100 - Music Appreciation

This course introduces students to an exploration of the basic music elements, a survey of musical periods and their characteristics from the ancient through the twentieth century; and a discussion of the differences between Western and non-Western musical form and function. Listening and concert attendance is required. This course satisfies a general education requirement in the Arts and Humanities Area.

SLOs:
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Identify and use the basic vocabulary and symbols of music.

  • Describe the periods and styles of music of the Western culture.

  • Identify the basic types of music created/used by non-Western cultures.

  • Verbalize and interpret their understanding of a music work.

  • Recognize the major instrumental families used in Western music.

  • Recognize and describe the emotional impact of music on the listener.
